The work that stopped me in my tracks here was a series of paintings that lined one of the exterior aisles. Here were rich colors layered in a way that lends the illusion of stained glass. Artist Denitza says, through her paintings, she looks to explore “the forms of our surroundings, cities, architecture, landscapes and the state of arrested development that somehow typically occurs in urban environments.” Her pieces use saturated hues and settings as basic as a brick building and as grand as the Brooklyn Bridge to illustrate relationships among nature, cityscapes and the human experience.
